This past April, I was able to catch up with Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot (Berlin) before their show in Los Angeles. A lot of you may have heard of Atari Teenage Riot because you have seen a video of them playing in Berlin on May Day in 1999 during a march put on my the Anti-Facsist Action in which a riot ensues. Or you may know of them because one of the sole reasons ATR started their band was to counter the nazi presence in the German punk scene.
They are currently known for for giving a large donation to wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s legal fund, and have shown full support for hacktivist group Anonymous. ATR is the very essence of the punk that I grew up to know, and I am glad to see that 20 years down the line, they are still pushing the envelope and fighting the good fight.
ATR has been one of my favorite bands since I was a kid, so I jumped at the opportunity to be able to pick Alec’s brain. In this video Alec discusses everything from the bands beginnings, occupy wall street, ATR’s involvement with Anti-Facsist Action, confrontations with the music industry and more!
